CBD (often also referred to by its medical name, cannabidiol), is a very specific type of chemical compound that is derived from the Cannabis sativa plant. It's a substance that naturally occurs and is used in a wide array of different products, from oils to edibles and absolutely everything in between.
CBD is known for its ability to impart a feeling of relaxation and calm to the user - this despite the fact that unlike THC, CBD is totally non-psychoactive. This means that you won't feel any effects like euphoria after ingesting.
Of course, all of this demands the question - is CBD an effective way to deal with anxiety and certain stress-related feelings that you might be experiencing? The good news is that people report that it absolutely is. This is likely for a number of reasons that are more than worth exploring.
CBD and Anxiety: What You Need to Know
Although CBD has not been officially approved by the Food and Drug Administration in the United States as an effective treatment for anxiety, a number of studies that have been conducted over the years strongly suggest that it is a viable option for this particular purpose.
In 2011, for example, a study confirmed that CBD not only reduced anxiety, but also discomfort when used by people with social anxiety disorder who were about to engage in some type of public speaking obligation. A separate study conducted in the same year showed much the same effect, after being used by a number of participants with social anxiety disorder.
Over the years, a significant amount of research has shown that CBD has a positive impact on anxiety by positively impacting the serotonin levels in a person's brain. Serotonin itself is a compound present in blood platelets that is thought to help regulate not only someone's mood and their social behavior, but also their appetite, their digestion levels, their sleep and even memory.
A lot of the medications that are clinically proven to treat anxiety - with many popular antidepressants being among that category - do so by regulating someone's serotonin levels. Therefore, it makes sense that CBD would be an effective treatment for anxiety if it works in much the same way.
During a comprehensive review of 49 separate studies that was conducted in 2015, researchers found evidence that "strongly supported" the use of CBD as a treatment for a wide range of different conditions. These include but are certainly not limited to ones like:
- Generalized anxiety disorder.
- Panic disorder.
- Social anxiety disorder.
- Obsessive compulsive disorder.
- Post-traumatic stress disorder, also commonly referred to as PTSD.
Finally, a recent study that was conducted in 2019, specifically used CBD to help treat people who were struggling with not only a range of different sleep-related issues, but more generalized anxiety problems as well.
Over the course of this study, it was revealed that a massive 80% of the participants with anxiety felt that their condition greatly improved over the first month. For the sake of full disclosure, almost 70% of people also reported that their sleeping habits dramatically improved, too - however, the results for sleep in particular seemed to vary over time.
At this point, however, there are some things you need to keep in mind. Several of these studies had admittedly small sample sizes - meaning that they aren't necessarily the best representation of the population as a whole. Likewise, none of these studies looked at the long-term impacts of taking CBD specifically for the purposes of anxiety.
However, it's clear that if you ARE currently suffering from anxiety and you're looking for a way to treat your condition that doesn't involve antidepressants, CBD is an option you might want to explore. At the very least, it's a conversation that you would want to have with your primary care physician so that you can make the best and most informed decisions possible when it comes to your health moving forward.
